To min/max, keep your troops back, put the shieldbearing troops ahead of your missile troops, so they'll soak up what fire you do receive, then jump in the tower, protected from fire, and it will move forward. It all depends on the troops you're facing and, sometimes, which castle it is. It will be tough to take a castle with that few. The enemy is distracted by the charging infantry and it's easy work for my archers to take most of the enemy archers out. Once the tower is in position I send for my infantry, then the archers get into position. Sometimes you have to get out to remind the tower to move by running past the forward set of wheels, then jump back inside before the enemy archers destroy your shield. You can jump right inside the thing and keep hitting the key to move forward. What I do is order all of my troops to hold position (out of range) while I take the damn tower in by myself.
